With a 31st place in the general standings after a quarter of the season, it is now much clearer for the Habs management which path to take in view of the trade deadline, which, believe it or not, will arrive sooner than we think.
Hughes seems very lucid about the current situation of his team, which definitely does not have the tools to be in the race this year, and he will therefore have to resolve to become, once again, a seller between now and March 7.
Several names are currently circulating on the market, and according to information reported by several reputable informants, Hughes' phone has not stoped ringing lately.
Jake Evans, David Savard, Joel Armia, Christian Dvorak, Michael Pezzetta and Mike Matheson are all players who are likely to be traded.
However, two of them are definitely on the way out, according to David Calabretta of The Fourth Period.
According to what he revealed, these two veterans are on their last legs with the Canadiens.
There would be virtually no chance of them returning next season, which means that if Hughes fails to trade them, they will be gone at the end of the season.
Their departure from the organization therefore seems inevitable.
In addition to freeing up two roster spots, their departure will also free up $7.85 million under the salary cap, which is far from negligible for the future management of the team.
