Even though the Canadiens are having a bad start to the season, the same cannot be said about Lane Hutson.

The team's second round pick in the 2022 draft presented in Montreal is already one of the most used defensemen by Martin St-Louis since the start of the campaign and his game is becoming more and more impressive as demonstrated by the sequence of yesterday afternoon's game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Hutson also collected two assists in his team's victory and was even used during the first wave of the power play on the first of Cole Caufield's two goals.

But what's really impressive about him is that the little American D-man is already elite when compared to other NHL defensemen in their rookie season.

To show you just how talented Hutson is, he ranks second in points by a rookie defenseman after 16 games in recent NHL history.

Hutson is only outranked by Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche, considered by many experts to be the best defenseman in the world.

We can see in this list that several of these defensemen have already won a Norris Trophy in their career, which bodes very well for number 48.

While he may not win the Norris this season, Hutson can still consider himself one of the favorites to get his hands on the Calder Trophy, as he is the third best scorer among rookies this season with 10 points. Logan Stankoven is currently leading rookies with 13 points and Matvei Michkov takes the second rank with 12.
