In the last few hours, Sportsnet's renowned tipster Elliotte Friedman revealed that the young Czech defenseman's days in the Ohio organization are numbered.
Despite excellent performances in the AHL since arriving in North America two years ago, Jiricek does not seem to be in the Blue Jackets' immediate plans.
Oddly enough, he has received very little playing time this season, despite his status as a top prospect.
This problematic situation dates back to last year, but it seems to have worsened since the arrival of new general manager Don Waddell.
Jiricek has not played since November 9 and has only played five games since the start of the season.
Elliotte Friedman indicated that Don Waddell would like to "resolve" the matter quickly, which could mean an imminent trade.
If Jiricek goes on the market, the Montreal Canadiens should seriously consider this opportunity.
At 6-foot-3 and 209 pounds, the right-handed defenseman would bring a physical presence and considerable talent to the Canadiens' defensive brigade, while filling a long-term need.
Alongside David Reinbacher and Logan Mailloux, Jiricek could solidify the right flank of Montreal's defense for the next ten years.
In his NHL career, Jiricek has collected 11 points in 52 games. In the AHL, he impressed with a total of 57 points in 84 games at only 18 and 19 years old.
This file deserves to be followed closely in the days to come.
