David Calabretta, of The Fourth Period, reports that Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes has recently attracted a lot of attention for potential trades.
Discussions are underway with the Habs, and four teams have reportedly contacted Hughes for a trade: the Anaheim Ducks, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings and Edmonton Oilers.
With the imminent return of two regular players, Rafael Harvey-Pinard and Patrik Laine, who should be ready to join the team shortly, management will likely have to make a move to integrate these two contracts.
A forward could be on the way out, and several players at the end of their contracts up front are on the hot seat.
We're talking about Joel Armia, Christian Dvorak, Jake Evans, Michael Pezzetta and Lucas Condotta.
Among them, Jake Evans seems the most likely to get a contract extension. However, he could also bring in a lot of money in the event of a trade.
A versatile defensive forward like Evans, capable of playing big minutes, especially on the penalty kill, is a valuable asset for a team aiming for the Stanley Cup.
The Canadiens only have one option to retain salary in a trade, and Hughes will likely have to use it for Dvorak's $4.45 million contract if he wants to trade him.
David Savard and Mike Matheson are also names to watch. These two veterans will certainly generate a lot of interest as the trade deadline approaches.
The next few weeks will be crucial in clarifying the direction the team will take.
In the meantime, Hughes' effort to explore all options to move the Canadiens forward must be recognized.
