Recently, Renaud Lavoie mentioned the possibility that young Jakub Dobes could be recalled by the Canadiens on BPM Sports. A suggestion that piques curiosity, but also raises some questions.
Dobes, a 6-foot-4 Czech giant, is having an impressive season with the Laval Rocket. In six starts, he has a goals-against average of 2.32 and a save percentage of 0.914.
This performance has earned him consideration as a viable option if the Habs decide to shake up their goaltending hierarchy.
But is it really a good idea?
Launching Jakub Dobes into the NHL at this stage could be premature. At 23, he is still in the development phase and needs to accumulate playing minutes to progress. The American Hockey League is ideal for that.
In Laval, he has the opportunity to refine his skills while consolidating his confidence.
The mistake would be to recall him simply to fill a void or, worse, to have him warm the bench in Montreal. We have seen in the past with Cayden Primeau how poor playing time management can slow down the evolution of a young goalie.
Renaud Lavoie offers an interesting alternative. The Canadiens could recall Dobes for one or two games, while maintaining a temporary rotation of three goalies.
This would allow us to evaluate his abilities at the highest level without compromising his long-term development.
Such a decision would offer some flexibility, but it must be made at the right time. Dobes should only be called up if it doesn't harm his playing time with the Rocket, where he can continue to progress and dominate.
In an ideal world, in my opinion, Dobes would complete a full season in the AHL before making the jump to the NHL. Montreal needs a long-term plan for its goaltenders, and rushing his development would be a mistake.
Patience is the key. If Dobes keeps up the momentum and proves he can dominate in Laval, his time will come.
