He had some good moments in the second half of last year's season, but when you look at the 50-game sample he has in the NHL over the years, it's pretty bad.
His stats are not worthy of a number 2 goalie, it's as simple as that. In today's NHL, both goalies have to do the job.
Indeed, the teams' number 1 goalie is no longer there for 72 of 82 games. His second has to be able to take on a considerable workload.
Cayden Primeau is clearly not showing that he can do it and there is a goalie available on waivers that could interest Kent Hughes.
Kaapo Kahkonen was waived by the Colorado Avalanche and Kent Hughes could very well claim him and submit Cayden Primeau in turn.
If he is not claimed, it would be a one-way trip to Laval for the goaltender.
There is also the possibility of giving a chance to Jakub Dobes or Connor Hughes, who are both playing very hard hockey with the Rocket this season.
Cayden Primeau is clearly no longer part of the Canadiens' plans and while the best solution would be to find a veteran to back up Samuel Montembeault, simply changing his second would be an improvement for the Montreal Canadiens.
We will know soon enough, as Kent Hughes must make his decision before 2:00 PM on Tuesday. What is certain is that he wants to improve the goaltending position.
