Kent Hughes was interested in him, but it appears he set his sights on Patrik Laine instead. Since the Finn's acquisition, nothing suggests that he is still working on acquiring Cole Caufield's best friend.
However, with the team's recent setbacks on offense and the glaring need for a 2nd line center, his name is slowly returning to the rumor mill. The question is more whether he is available, and it seems so, but not at any price.
We are talking here about a player who is able to change the outcome of a match single-handedly, but who is very unhappy in Anaheim and who is clearly no longer wanted there.
He has only gathered 1 goal and 2 assists in 12 games this season, but he has two seasons of over 60 points under his belt. His average playing time is in free fall, while he plays two minutes less per game than before.
I don't want to excuse his poor performances, it's up to him to pull himself together, but a change of scenery could do him a lot of good, especially since he would have the opportunity to play on the second line upon his arrival in Montreal.
The major point to consider is the price that Kent Hughes will have to pay to make his acquisition. Ducks GM Pat Verbeek won't let him go for nothing and the price seems to be too expensive for the 31 other clubs.
Kent Hughes has always said he will not jeopardize the Habs' future. It now remains to be seen if he can make a trade involving Trevor Zegras work without making too many sacrifices. Good luck!
